There are a shockingly large number of donkeys out there writing code for a living, it's true. You wonder how any job ever gets completed. Over the years various truths have become self-evident.
(1) It's all about aptitude. Some people can programme from birth, more or less. Conversely, rubbish coders stay rubbish, regardless of how many years they plug away. One of the best developers I ever recruited was a biochemist whose only previous software experience was a bit of VB within his post-doc work.
(2) Coding is coding. If you have a crafty, clever engineer who's only programmed in one language, far better to get him or her in than a dullard who's done terribly mediocre work over a wide range of platforms. A new language is just new syntax; a sharp cookie will hoover it up in weeks.
(3) Money doesn't always come into it. The most productive place I ever worked was the worst paid; then I went to work for banks, and there were vast hordes of dimwits being paid silly money.

This is right on.

I saw some dumb ass HR people on dice.com write descriptions like this. (for all the skills required as in Expert Level)

"PHP, C#.NET, ASP.NET, HTML, VB Script, VB6, Windows Server, Red Hat Linux, Perl, jQuery, Ajax, SOAP, MS SQL, MySQL, WordPress, Drupal"

ALL expert levels on those skills. Then there is a bunch of other stuff they have in there.

That primarily translates to ... YOU MUST KNOW EVERYTHING.

Where do they get these guys?
